I was so sorry to hear about the passing of the man I always knew as simply Mr Webb. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
I shall forever be indebted to Mr Webb because, frankly, he saved my life.
In 1973, I was cycling to school along the Cheltenham Road in Bristol when I was hit by a lorry and dragged a hundred yards down the road. The driver didn’t stop. My injuries were horrific and life-changing. I was taken to the BRI where, with massive dedication and skill, Mr Webb operated on me for over four hours administering more than 18 pints of blood. He later said that he’d never seen a patient so close to death from haemorrhagic shock.
I was operated on half a dozen times over the next three months by Mr Webb and his team whilst in the BRI and later the Children’s Hospital. Thanks to his incredible care and support, I made a miraculous recovery. Despite missing a term at school, I subsequently passed my exams, went to University and had a long and successful career. I’m now retired and in my sixties but, despite the passage of over fifty years, I’ve never forgotten the amazing surgeon who made it all possible.
I’m so glad that he had a long and fulfilling life and a large, loving family to support and care for him. He was a truly great man and he deserved it. I never got the chance as an adult to thank him properly for what he did for me but maybe this will go some way towards making amends. Thank you Mr Webb.

Asa medical student, I was taught by Mr Webb. Later, I was very pleased to be appointed as his house surgeon in 1974.

Mr Webb was a gifted surgeon, and was widely respected as such.
Patients knew he would always do his best for them. His approach when talking to patients clear and strait forward, with no sentimentality, but always caring .

He was a splendid teacher. His ward rounds were never dull.
He was an expert on medical history as well as histopathology. This put surgery on a firm basis and made his teaching rounded and compelling. There were always some lighter notes displaying his dry and pithy wit.

I felt greatly privileged to have known him.I am very grateful for all that he taught me.

He was a great man.
Mr Webb, may you rest in eternal peace.

I was Mr Webb’s houseman in 1973. He was one of the best bosses I ever had. He was always straight, honest, forthright and very supportive and protective of his juniors. If somewhat firm with medical students (“You’re not on the medical side now, Mr Bird”).
His surgical skills were wonderful and engendered complete trust in patients and staff.
He had a rather well hidden but delightful sense of humour. I may have been a trifle pompous as a young man and, at a function, he once introduced me to two middle aged lady GPs as “Lord Bird”, they fawned over me for several minutes until I disabused them.
He was so pleased when he bought a new Jaguar, but very distressed when he couldn’t get the new fangled automatic transmission to work as he wished, and told us about it all morning on the ward round.
He was the surgeon I would always recommend to friends and patients. And we trusted him to operate on our son.
He was a personal medical hero of mine.
Rest in Peace, Mr Webb.
And thank you for showing me how a proper doctor should be.
