I was so sorry to hear about the passing of the man I always knew as simply Mr Webb. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
I shall forever be indebted to Mr Webb because, frankly, he saved my life.
In 1973, I was cycling to school along the Cheltenham Road in Bristol when I was hit by a lorry and dragged a hundred yards down the road. The driver didn’t stop. My injuries were horrific and life-changing. I was taken to the BRI where, with massive dedication and skill, Mr Webb operated on me for over four hours administering more than 18 pints of blood. He later said that he’d never seen a patient so close to death from haemorrhagic shock.
I was operated on half a dozen times over the next three months by Mr Webb and his team whilst in the BRI and later the Children’s Hospital. Thanks to his incredible care and support, I made a miraculous recovery. Despite missing a term at school, I subsequently passed my exams, went to University and had a long and successful career. I’m now retired and in my sixties but, despite the passage of over fifty years, I’ve never forgotten the amazing surgeon who made it all possible.
I’m so glad that he had a long and fulfilling life and a large, loving family to support and care for him. He was a truly great man and he deserved it. I never got the chance as an adult to thank him properly for what he did for me but maybe this will go some way towards making amends. Thank you Mr Webb.
